Done With Care, by Hand, Here in Cumbria
I’m Martin. I live in north Cumbria with my wife and our two dogs. I’m a keen kayaker, and now and then I offer a quiet, respectful service: scattering ashes on the lakes or the sea.
I charge just enough to cover my costs. This isn’t my main job - I do something completely different full-time. But this is something I care deeply about. It’s peaceful, it feels right, and I take it seriously.
I go about it with the same care and professionalism I bring to my day job.
If this sounds like the kind of farewell you’d want for someone you love, I’d be glad to help.
This is a fully bespoke service. You can choose the location whether it’s a lake or the sea and decide on any words that feel right to you. I can read a poem, say a prayer, or simply say goodbye as I release the ashes back to nature.
You are welcome to watch from the shore if that is right for you. I’ll paddle out into deep water, record the whole process quietly on video, and mark the exact spot using what3words
Afterwards, I’ll send you a simple certificate with the date, time, and exact location, plus a link to the video.
This service is available for both people and pets, and I ask for £140 to cover my costs.
For more details, please refer to the FAQ section.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to talk it over.

You can dip your toes into any sea and, in that moment, be touching every ocean on the planet. That’s the quiet magic of water — it connects us all.
By choosing the sea as a final resting place, you’re creating the chance to reconnect with your loved one from anywhere in the world.

I know and love the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea — wild, peaceful, and full of meaning. If you have another location in mind, I’m always happy to consider it.
A lake holds memory differently. It’s quieter. More rooted. Most of your loved one’s ashes will remain within the waters of that place — becoming part of its story, and yours.
I launch from public car parks and paddle out to a quiet spot away from view. There, I scatter the ashes carefully by hand, recording the process if you’d like.

Places like Derwentwater or Coniston are especially beautiful — but I’m happy to talk through other locations if you have one in mind.
Earlier this year I made a short piece to camera explaining a little more about myself and the service that I offer.
I’m not a company or an operator — just one person offering a simple service with care. But I’ve still taken the time to think things through properly.
I’ve spoken to local landowners, environmental groups, and public bodies about what I do. I’ve listened to their feedback and made changes where needed. I don’t use private land. I paddle out from public launch spots. I don’t leave anything behind.
Ashes are mostly made of bone mineral — they don’t contain nutrients, and I’m careful where I scatter them. I do it gently, by hand, in quiet places, one family at a time.
You don’t need a licence to scatter ashes in the UK — but it’s still important to go about it respectfully. That’s exactly what I try to do.
I only carry out a small number of scatterings each year. This keeps it peaceful — for me, for you, and for the landscape.
