I’m Martin. I live in north Cumbria with my wife and our two dogs. I’m a keen kayaker — and now and then, I offer a quiet, respectful service: scattering ashes on the lakes or the sea.
I charge just enough to cover my costs. This isn’t my main job — I do something completely different full-time. But this is something I care deeply about. It’s peaceful, it feels right, and I take it seriously.
For now, I can only offer lake scatterings on Windermere, and sea scatterings on the Cumbrian coast. I’m speaking with landowners and organisations to make more locations available in future.
I go about it with the same care and professionalism I bring to my day job.
If this sounds like the kind of farewell you’d want for someone you love, I’d be glad to help.
Lakeland Legacy Ash Scattering
How it works
This is a fully bespoke service. You can choose the location whether it’s a lake or the sea and decide on any words that feel right to you. I can read a poem, say a prayer, or simply say goodbye as I release the ashes back to nature.
You are welcome to watch from the shore if that is right for you. I’ll paddle out into deep water, record the whole process quietly on video, and mark the exact spot using what3words
Afterwards, I’ll send you a simple certificate with the date, time, and exact location, plus a link to the video.
This service is available for both people and pets, and I ask for £140 to cover my costs.
For more details, please refer to the FAQ section.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to talk it over.

By choosing the sea as a final resting place, you’re creating the chance to reconnect with your loved one from anywhere in the world.
I know and love the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea — wild, peaceful, and full of meaning. If you have another location in mind, I’m always happy to consider it.
It’s essential to avoid Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), so the coast north of Allonby is off-limits. However, most of the Cumbrian coastline — including the waters off St Bees — remains permitted.

A lake holds memory differently. It’s quieter. More rooted. Most of your loved one’s ashes will remain within the waters of that place — becoming part of its story, and yours.

I’m currently only able to offer scatterings on Windermere, as most other lakes in the Lake District are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).
However, I’m actively exploring permissions with landowners and relevant organisations, and hope to offer more locations in future.
Video
Earlier this year I made a short piece to camera explaining a little more about myself and the service that I offer.
Things I’ve Thought About Carefully
Care, Permission, and the Environment
I’m not a company or a commercial operator — just one person offering a simple service with care. But that doesn’t mean I take it lightly.
I’ve spoken with local landowners, environmental groups, and public bodies to explain what I do. I’ve listened to their concerns and adjusted my approach where needed.
I will not scatter on Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), which include most of the Lake District’s lakes. I launch only from public access points, avoid protected habitats, and leave no trace.
Cremated remains are mostly made of bone mineral — inert, not nourishing. Still, I take great care in choosing the right spot. I scatter gently, by hand, in deep water, one family at a time.
There’s no licence required to scatter ashes in the UK — but there is a responsibility to do it properly. That’s what I try to honour.
I only carry out a small number of scatterings each year. That keeps it peaceful — for you, for me, and for the landscape.
